Few mountain guesthouses can tell you the ski slope is two minutes from the door. The MAPAMONT guesthouse is one of them: from Văliug you walk down to the Casa Baraj slope, which is also floodlit for night skiing, and when you want more, you drive up to the Semenic plateau, about 17 km away.
Between the two runs one of the most beautiful descents in the country: the Semenic–Văliug link slope, almost 6 km long, through the forest, finishing right in Văliug. Below you’ll find the slopes, their lengths, the real driving times from the guesthouse and a few winter tips.
The Casa Baraj slope
The Casa Baraj ski area lies at the foot of the mountain, right in Văliug, between the forest and Gozna Lake. From MAPAMONT you get here in a 2-minute walk — no driving and no parking to worry about. There are two slopes, both floodlit for night skiing, so your ski day doesn’t end at sunset.
Casa Baraj — the main slope
800 metres long, suited to beginners, children and the first runs of the day. It’s the slope you walk to in your ski boots, straight from the guesthouse.
Casa Baraj Special
The short, steep 250-metre option, for experienced skiers looking for an adrenaline rush.
Just a few steps away, on the lakeshore, Après Ski Ponton Casa Baraj is the place for a warm break between runs.
Ski in the evening, your room 2 minutes away. With night skiing at Casa Baraj you can keep skiing after dark, and at the end there’s no drive waiting for you — just your warm room at MAPAMONT.
The Semenic–Văliug run
On the road that winds down through the forest from Semenic to Văliug (Franzdorf, by its old German name), in winter you can ski a slope you rarely find in Romania: almost 6 km long and considered the longest ski slope in the country.
The slope has no artificial snow and no night skiing, so it only opens when there is enough natural snow, and the run is skied in daylight. To get back up to the plateau, an organised bus or minibus (ski bus) leaves from Văliug.
If you stay at MAPAMONT, the perfect day looks like this: take the ski bus up to Semenic in the morning, ski on the plateau and end the day skiing all the way down to Văliug, 2 minutes from the guesthouse — without getting behind the wheel.
Slopes on Semenic
The Semenic plateau, at around 1,400 m above sea level, is the largest ski area around Văliug, and the snow lasts much longer up here than down in the valley. The slopes are served by drag lifts. These are the certified slopes on Semenic Mountain:
| Slope | Length | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Goznuța | 500 m | Intermediate |
| Crucea de Brazi 1 | 700 m | Intermediate |
| Crucea de Brazi 2 | 530 m | Intermediate |
| Slalom Uriaș | 1,250 m | Intermediate* |
| Pârtia din Sat 1 | 500 m | Intermediate |
| Pârtia din Sat 2 | 500 m | Intermediate |
* Slalom Uriaș is open in seasons with plenty of snow. Lengths and difficulty levels according to the official list of certified ski slopes.

The road from Văliug climbs in hairpin bends through the forest, so in winter it’s worth setting off early in the morning. For trails and villages in the area, read our guide to Gărâna, Brebu Nou and Semenic.
Gărâna in winter
Gărâna — Wolfsberg, by its old name — is the hilltop village about 9 km from MAPAMONT. Its historic slope no longer operates regularly for alpine skiing, so for skiing we recommend Casa Baraj or the Semenic plateau. Gărâna is still a lovely winter stop, though: a walk through the quiet, snow-covered village, just a quarter of an hour from the guesthouse.
How far to the slopes
These are real travel times from the MAPAMONT guesthouse in Văliug. In winter, with snow on the road or weekend traffic, the drive takes longer.
| Destination | Distance | Good conditions | Winter (snow / traffic) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Casa Baraj slope, Văliug | On foot | 2 minutes | 2 minutes |
| Gărâna (Wolfsberg) | ~9 km | 12–15 minutes | 15–20 minutes |
| Semenic plateau | ~17 km | ~25 minutes | 35–50 minutes |
Winter tips
- Winter tyres and snow chains: the road up to the Semenic plateau is winding and can be covered in snow — don’t set off without them.
- Leave early for Semenic: on snowy weekends, the road and the car parks on the plateau get busy.
- Check the snow cover: the Semenic–Văliug run relies only on natural snow, so it opens only after heavy snowfall.
- Plan your way back: after the long run, the way back up to the plateau is by the organised ski bus from Văliug.
- Make the most of night skiing: at Casa Baraj you can ski in the evening, 2 minutes from your room.
Mountain snow is never guaranteed. Slopes with natural snow only open after heavy snowfall. Before heading up to Semenic, check the road and slope conditions.
Stay next to the slope
After a day on the slopes, the best thing is to have nowhere left to drive. The MAPAMONT guesthouse in Văliug is a boutique guesthouse with 14 elegant rooms, a 2-minute walk from the Casa Baraj slope and 17 km from the Semenic plateau.
Why is MAPAMONT the ideal base for a ski holiday?
- The slope is a 2-minute walk away: you reach Casa Baraj without a car or a parking space — and come back the same way, even after night skiing.
- Breakfast included: head out to the slopes after a relaxed breakfast served at the guesthouse.
- Close to Semenic: the plateau is 17 km away, and the long Semenic–Văliug run ends right next to the guesthouse.
