Gărâna (The Jazz Village), Brebu Nou and Hiking Trails to Semenic Peak

The Banat Mountain region hides some of the most fascinating natural and cultural treasures in Romania. Far from the crowds of major tourist resorts, the Semenic Mountains offer ancient forests, villages with a unique history, lakes mountains, and a bohemian atmosphere unlike anywhere else in Eastern Europe. If you are planning a getaway where fresh mountain air blends with jazz melodies, lakeside walks, and accessible hiking trails, the Gărâna – Brebu Nou – Semenic Peak triangle is the perfect destination.
To make the most of your experience, you need a strategically located starting point. MAPAMONT Guesthouse in Văliug, situated right next to Gozna Lake, is the perfect “luxury base camp” from which to explore the entire region at your leisure. Every destination featured in this guide is just a short drive away, allowing you to discover the best of the area with ease and comfort.
Gărâna (Wolfsberg) – From a Pemi Village to the “Village of Jazz”
Located at an altitude of approximately 1,000 meters and just 12 km from Văliug, Gărâna feels like a place from another world. The village (known by its German name, Wolfsberg) was founded in the 19th century by German settlers brought from Bohemia, known locally as the Pemi. They established a settlement with a distinctive architectural style: charming white houses lined along wide streets, featuring symmetrical façades, wooden shutters, and large traditional gates.
Although the Pemi community declined after the 1990s, Gărâna did not fade away—quite the opposite. The village experienced a remarkable revival and became the cultural capital of the Mountain Banat region after a group of artists from Timișoara transformed many of the abandoned houses into holiday homes and creative retreats.

Gărâna International Jazz Festival
Every summer (usually in July), Poiana Lupului ("Wolf's Meadow") becomes the epicenter of great music in Central and Eastern Europe. Gărâna Jazz Festival attracts thousands of visitors and world-class artists who gather to listen to jazz legends performing under the open sky, seated on rustic wooden benches and surrounded by vast beech forests.
Tip: Mountain nights can be surprisingly cool, even in the middle of summer. Be sure to bring warm clothing and a rain jacket to stay comfortable throughout the festival.
Attractions to visit in Gărâna during the rest of the year
Traditional Pemi Architecture – A walk through the village streets is a living lesson in history, showcasing the unique heritage and building style of the Pemi settlers.
Poiana Lupului (Wolf's Meadow) – Well worth visiting outside the festival season as well, when its complete tranquility allows you to fully appreciate the beauty of the surrounding landscape.
Art Galleries and Sculpture Camps – The village frequently hosts visual arts symposiums, exhibitions, and sculpture workshops that contribute to its vibrant cultural atmosphere.
The Pemi Village Museum – An excellent place to learn about the history, traditions, and way of life of the local Pemi community.
Brebu Nou (Weidenthal) and Trei Ape Lake
Just 4 km from Gărâna lies Brebu Nou (known in German as Weidenthal), another Pemi village with a much quieter and more secluded atmosphere. If Gărâna is all about energy and music, Brebu Nou is the perfect retreat for reflection, reading, and reconnecting with nature—an idyllic landscape that feels as though it has been lifted straight from a postcard of the Austrian Alps.
The area's main attraction is Trei Ape Lake (Three Waters Lake), fed by three mountain streams: Brebu, Grădiște, and Semenic. It is the highest reservoir in the Semenic Mountains and an irresistible summer destination, offering:
Water Activities – Swimming, kayaking, pedal boating, and Stand-Up Paddleboarding (SUP).
Fishing and Relaxation – Shaded lakeside spots that are perfect for enjoying a good book or practicing recreational fishing.
A Mountain Biking Hub – Dozens of kilometers of forest roads and trails suitable for riders of all skill levels.
Hiking trails to Semenic Peak
The Semenic Mountains stand out for their suspended plateau landscape. Unlike the steep ridges of the Făgăraș or Retezat mountains, Semenic offers gentle crests and vast alpine meadows — trails accessible to everyone, from families with children to trail running and mountain biking enthusiasts. Semenic Peak (1,447 m) and Piatra Goznei Peak (1,445 m) offer 360° panoramic views over the entire Banat region. Most of the area is protected within the Semenic – Cheile Carașului National Park.

Auto / cycling option: TransSemenic (DJ 582)
For those who prefer road cycling or a quick drive up, the TransSemenic road (Brebu Nou – Prislop Pass – Semenic Resort, ~15 km of asphalt) offers spectacular bends winding through the forest. An excellent alternative for days with uncertain weather.
Routes overview
⚠️ Safety on Semenic: the plateau (over 1,400 m) is known for dense fog that can cut visibility within minutes. Bring a waterproof jacket, at least 2 litres of water, and boots with good grip, download an offline map (Munții Noștri, Komoot, Wikiloc), and never leave the marked trail.

Lindenfeld – the ghost village of Banat. From Brebu Nou, along a spectacular forest road, you reach Lindenfeld, a village founded by the Bohemian settlers (pemi) in 1828 and now completely abandoned.
