There are a few days a year when time should flow differently. From 23 to 27 December 2026, MAPAMONT guesthouse becomes a Christmas home in the mountains: the tree decorated in the lounge, the fire in the fireplace, quiet mornings with an unhurried breakfast and long evenings when you don't have to go anywhere.
The guesthouse is in Văliug, at the foot of the Semenic Mountains, by Gozna Lake — and just a 2-minute walk from Après Ski Ponton Casa Baraj. 24 December: the traditional pig slaughter, pomana porcului and mulled wine
In the villages of Banat, as everywhere in Romania, the pig slaughter before Christmas is more than a household chore — it's a moment that gathers family and neighbours around the fire. Everyone works together from the morning, and at the end the hosts serve pomana porcului — freshly cooked pork, served hot, with a glass of mulled wine.
On Christmas Eve we invite you to experience this custom the way it's done in the countryside. It's an optional experience that you add to your stay only if you wish.

25 December: festive Christmas dinner, drinks included
Christmas evening is the moment the whole stay revolves around. The festive dinner brings together a festive menu, drinks included and the warm atmosphere of a mountain home dressed up for the holidays.

Children under 10 join free of charge, and for children over 10 the rate is 175 RON. Let us know the number of adults and children when you book, so we can prepare your places at the table.
The décor: tree, fireplace and warm light
In December, the MAPAMONT lounge changes. The tall tree, decorated with red bows and pine cones, stands next to the illuminated MAP A MONT sign, Santa and the elves find their place by the sofa, and the fire in the fireplace becomes the spot where every day ends.
Everything is designed for the slow rhythm of the holidays: a coffee by the tree in the morning, a book in the lounge in the afternoon, a glass by the fire in the evening. And when you retire, one of the guesthouse's 14 boutique rooms is waiting for you.
Winter in Văliug: snow, Semenic and après-ski at Casa Baraj
Văliug is one of the most beautiful winter destinations in the Banat Mountains. When it snows, the road to the resort runs through a tunnel of white trees, and Gozna Lake and the surrounding forests fall quiet under the snow.
From MAPAMONT it's just a 2-minute walk to Après Ski Ponton Casa Baraj, while the Semenic plateau and the villages of Gărâna and Brebu Nou are about 30 minutes away by car. For more ideas, read our Văliug guide.
Mountain roads can be covered in snow in December. For the drive up to the Semenic plateau, fit your car with winter tyres and check road conditions before you set off.
